Stress is fast becoming the biggest health problem in modern societies. Financial pressures, work pressures, family pressures – so much to do so little time to do it all! Here’s five quick ways to ease the pressure and relieve stress:

1.     Switch off from the daily grind and relax for at least one hour every day.  Just shut the world out and do something you enjoy.  This is easier said than done but the benefits are remarkable.  Take the dogs for a walk, read, play music, take a relaxing bath.  All are great ways to unwind.

2.     Get away from your stressful situation – literally.  If your day to day life is what is causing you stress, get some physical distance from your problem.  This will allow you to gather your thoughts.  If possible, take a day or even the week end away and change your surroundings.  Physical distance away from the problem can bring clarity.  This will help you calm down and relax and give your unconscious, problem solving mind chance to work.

3.     Decide to embrace change.  Many people find change stressful.  However, change is a constant in life and fighting it to keep the status quo will cause soaring stress levels.  When you are faced with change, try to find the positives associated with it and embrace them.  Change doesn’t cause stress, worry does.  Decide to react positively to change and your stress levels will fall.

4.     Stop procrastinating.  In life there are always so many things that need to be done.  We all need to clean the car, do the housework, paint the fence, weed the garden etc.  And we all want to read more, get fit, stop smoking, learn the piano/guitar etc.  There is never enough time.  This increases stress levels to fever pitch as we slowly start to drown in our To-Do list!

So why not try this?   Make a list of all these chores and schedule “Blitz Day”.  On this day, get up early and spend the whole day sorting out each of these jobs.  Take few breaks, have only a quick bite at lunchtime and just blitz through these irritating but necessary tasks.  As you go through the day, you’ll feel your stress levels falling and you’ll realize just how effective and industrious you can be!  You’ll also be amazed how re-energised you become afterwards in your newly cleaned and de-cluttered home environment!

5.     Treat yourself to a pamper day.  This is a day where you escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday living and enjoy some stress-free time.  You’ll also feel great and give your well being a huge boost.  If you can afford it, take time to have a light workout, a swim, a sauna, a Jacuzzi, a steam room, whatever.  But if you can’t, just decide to do what makes you unwind – that book you want to finish, some needlepoint, a bike ride in the country.  Try to do this at least once a month; it is an excellent stress-buster.

These five tips will help you to reduce your stress levels substantially if you put them into action.  Give them a go – you’ll be amazed at the results!
